Conduct Certificate with a New Face

Some time ago, I met a student from IIT who was the student convener of the Alumni Association that year. He told me that the authority would invite applications for the student conveners (for different activities) every year. As there will be many aspirants, it is a usual practice to conduct interviews for such designations. It is evident how much importance is given by IITs for the selection of the most appropriate student to lead an activity. I think we may follow this in our college too.

Years ago, students of our college were given Conduct Certificates with different adjectives viz., Excellent, Good and Satisfactory to describe their character. This system disappeared over time.

Now the character of all the students in our college is the same. All are Good, on the conduct certificate.  I prefer this, as it doesn’t seem nice to categorize the students as mentioned earlier. But we can do something else.

It would be nice if we modify the Conduct Certificate by including information about the participation of the student in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in the college. This has many advantages.
  1. When the students understand that their efforts and involvement in various activities are recorded on the Conduct Certificate, they will be inspired and their participation will be enhanced. This improves the intellectual health as well as the physical health of the student community.
  2. More importantly, enhanced participation in various activities which require creativity, will diminish their involvement in unpleasant incidents occur at the college.
  3. The talents and efforts of the students bring glory and reputation for the college. Hence it is important to acknowledge and appreciate it properly.
  4. The student may get an additional benefit during job interviews, if he possesses a Conduct Certificate which states that he was the .....................in the college.
  5. Once we implement the Conduct Certificate with a new face, each student will be curious to see it. He will be thrilled to receive it. Because it is prepared specifically for him. It is signed only for him. It includes his major activities apart from academics. It gives an overall idea about his campus life. Each student will be proud to possess such a beautiful Certificate rather than a conventional one stating that his/her conduct is good.

Implementation

However, in the present system, it is difficult to distribute such individual Conduct Certificate to each student. There are practical difficulties because different students involve in different activities. If we want to implement this system, the following steps are to be taken.

  1. At present a computer program is used to send the internal marks to the parents. When we feed the name of the student, it will generate the marks of the student for various subjects. Similarly, an appropriate program is to be developed for printing an individual Conduct Certificate for each student, when we feed the name, branch and other relevant information about each student.
  2. A Software Club is to be formed at the college for this. It comprises of students who have software skills and social commitment. This work shall be supervised by 1 or 2 faculty members.
  3. The faculty members in charge of various activities in the college shall submit the list of students before the deadline. The designations like student convener, committee manager, member, etc. should be specified.
  4. The Certificate should be printed beautifully on good quality paper.
  5. Statements may be incorporated on the Conduct Certificate as follows. He/She was the ..........................in the College Union (year). He/She was the student convener/committee manager/ member of activity (year).
